Neurotoxin Before PMU – When to Do It & Why

Do you love Botox as much as permanent makeup, but you are not sure whether these procedures can be done at the same time, or there’s some waiting period between the treatments, so they turn out equally successful?

Today, our trusted PMUHub contributor, Diandra Leigh Dente, founder of DLD Brows, a permanent makeup artist and a huge Botox fan, talks about neurotoxin before PMU.

A Bit About Neurotoxins

The most popular neurotoxin, Botox, is a neurotoxic protein injection that paralyzes chemical signals that cause muscles to contract. Botox is the brand most are familiar with, but there are also many other types of neurotoxins such as Jeuveau, Dysport, and Xeomin.

The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. So, Botox injections are most often used for softening the lines on the forehead, the area where microblading or other permanent eyebrow treatments are done.

Neurotoxin Before PMU: Is It Safe?

Yes, getting neurotoxin before PMU (e.g. microblading, powder brows, nano brows etc.) is perfectly safe, but only if it’s done at least 15 days prior to the initial PMU treatment and then again 15 days prior to retouch appointment.

Why Does Botox Have to Be Done 15 Days Before PMU Brow Procedure?

Neurotoxin needs some time to settle and take effect. The risk is that Botox may move from the area where it has been injected and can cause facial paralyzation if it isn’t settled yet (we don’t want that!).

Therefore, it’s important to wait at least 2 weeks between neurotoxins and microblading to make sure it has completely settled and it’s safe to treat the brow area. If possible wait a bit longer, just to be sure.

How Long After PMU Brow Procedure Do I Have to Wait to Do Botox?

You can have neurotoxins done immediately after your flowy brow, microblading or other brow PMU appointment. Neurotoxins are injected into the muscle, so they won’t affect your results or healing of the pigment, and they can be done immediately after if you wish.

So, Which Should I Do First: Neurotoxin or Microblading?

Nano Stroking, Microblading, Powder Brow, or other brow PMU treatments are typically recommended before neurotoxin. Micropigmentation lasts 1-2 years and neurotoxin lasts 3-6 months.

It is best to do your eyebrows first because the design is based on your natural bone structure. Neurotoxins may alter the appearance of your muscles for a short amount of time and should you decide to cease Botox treatments, your brows will settle at their original balanced position.

Playing Devil’s Advocate: the Pro of Neurotoxin Before PMU

Even though it’s generally recommended to get neurotoxins after PMU, as an artist I am more of a fan of getting neurotoxin injections before PMU.

Here’s why. Neurotoxins tighten the skin. When I hairstroke, microblade, or perform any other permanent brow service, I want to stretch the skin as tight as possible with that three-four-point stretch. This is much easier if the Botox is already done.

As an artist, I personally love a client who has and consistently does neurotoxins before PMU appointments. I feel the results are just that much crisper because my stretch is much tighter.

But, as explained above, there is also the argument that neurotoxins should be done after PMU, because they lose their effects much before PMU and the brows return to their original place.

I truly believe art has no rules… either is right depending on the case.

As a client, as long as you have done your research and are doing your procedure with a highly skilled and trained professional PMU artist they will be able to follow the natural bone structure and facial features to ensure the best results.

Don’t Worry About Me, Worry About Your Elevens

Neurotoxins are very popular, affordable, and simple treatments that really work magic. No skincare product can diminish fine lines and wrinkles as well as Botox can. It works great to prevent the appearance of those first lines on your forehead.

So feel free to combine it with PMU brow treatments, just make sure you do it at least 15 days before the PMU treatment. Or immediately after. If you are not sure when it’s best, consult your trusted brow artist.
