The Market’s Not Oversaturated
A lot of people who want to go into PMU are probably looking into the super famous branches – primarily brows. Although microblading and brow PMU can be a lot of fun (and a great source of income), the market is getting oversaturated.
SMP is still relatively less popular than the top PMU treatments, but it’s growing super fast! So, if you want to try your hand at it, now’s the perfect time.

There’s a Lot of Money to Be Made
There are a lot of benefits to working in the beauty industry and, more specifically, PMU. But – let’s be real for a moment – no career is a great career if you can’t make a living out of it.
But SMP can give you the life you want!
The treatments, in all honesty, are pretty pricey. In the US, the standard price for the usual 2-3 sessions is $4000, but even smaller areas (like scars or bald spots) average $2000.
Most of your clients will need to come in for the occasional correction which alone costs around $2500.
That means that even if you invest in the best equipment possible, you’ll still be making a profit. The trick is to maintain a high standard of services and invest in a bit of marketing and the clients will just keep pouring in!
You Can Make Your Own Schedule
If you do decide on starting a small business based on your SMP skills, another huge benefit is that you can make your own schedule! If you want to take a few days off or prefer working only in the afternoons, nobody can stop you!
If you still want to work at an already established salon, you’ll still have a lot of say in when you come in. Since there are no mandatory 8-hour shifts but only client time slots, you will probably have the freedom to create your own schedule.

It’s Relatively Easy to Get Started
The beauty of a lot of PMU fields is that they don’t necessarily require degrees to get started. However, you’ll still need some training. Courses are easy to find online, with a lot of artists offering them through their websites.
These courses can range from days to months in length, although we don’t recommend taking on customers without getting enough practice first. Ideally, you’ll find a beginner’s course you like, then find more advanced ones, and amass a few certifications before setting up shop.
That way not only will you be more confident in what you do, but displaying all those certificates in your workspace will instill a sense of trust between you and your clients.
There’s Room to Grow
Like we already said, after completing a beginner’s course, you can move on to more advanced ones. But, that’s not the only direction you can take.
SMP isn’t too vastly different from other forms of micropigmentation. After you’ve got the mechanics down, you can branch out to other types of, for example, restorative micropigmentation.
The areas are, of course, different and will require lots of practice and adjustment, but switching paths isn’t impossible.
So, if you’re afraid of eventually getting bored of SMP, you can ease your mind knowing that time spent learning won’t be wasted even if you decide to move on to different things.
