First, there were classic lash extensions, and then lash technicians found a way to make the lashes appear even thicker and fuller with volume lash extensions. The combination of these two created a new eyelash extensions style – hybrid lashes. Popular for being customizable and looking more natural than volume lashes, these are very often requested.

What are Hybrid Lashes?

Hybrid lash extensions combine two styles – classic lashes and Russian volume lashes – to create a customized, more natural look. Classic lashes, where 1 lash extension is applied to 1 of your natural lashes, are added at some spots to add length to the lashes. Russian volume lashes are small fans of 2-6 attached lashes applied to 1 of the natural lashes. These are used to add more density and fullness.

So, hybrid lashes are classic lashes (1:1) and volume lashes (2-6:1) mixed to give length and volume to sparse lashes. The result? Wispy, textured lash extension look that looks more natural than Russian volume look.

Hybrid Lashes Treatment

The hybrid lash extensions treatment lasts 1.5 – 2.5 hours. As said above, the lash techs use a mix of classic lashes and volume lashes, usually 50% of one style, 50% of the other, but sometimes, the relation is 30% : 70%, depending on how thick you want your hybrid eyelashes to be.

The lash tech will combine the lash extensions of various thicknesses, lengths, and curls to give you the desired look, depending on your preferences and the state of your natural lashes. You can choose whether you want a spiky hybrid set or a shorter, more natural-looking wispy set.

How Do I Prepare for the Hybrid Lash Extension Treatment?

Before you come to your hybrid lashes appointment, it is advisable to remove all traces of makeup and come with completely clean lashes. Avoid oil-based products and don’t use a lash curler before the treatment.

Lash techs also advise washing your hair before the treatment, since you will be asked to avoid long showers and steam for 24 hours after the treatment until the glue is dried completely.

If you wear contact lenses, take them off before the appointment. Also, it is good not to drink coffee before the treatment since you will have to be still for 2 hours.

What Does the Hybrid Lashes Aftercare Look Like?

The aftercare for hybrid eyelashes is not complicated, but you need to be careful in the first 24 hours after the treatment.

  • Avoid hot showers and steam, until the glue is completely dry.
  • Don’t use oil-based products.
  • Don’t use curler nor mascara.
  • Sleep on your back.
  • Don’t touch the lashes.

How Long Do Hybrid Lashes Last?

Hybrid eyelash extensions are attached to your natural lashes, so they follow their growth cycle and fall off with them. Therefore, hybrid eyelash extensions last 6-8 weeks but expect to lose about 50% of hybrid lashes after 3-4 weeks.

How Often Should I Have Hybrid Lashes Infills?

Infills, or fill-ins, are usually booked 3-4 weeks after the initial treatment. Lash artists usually require you to have at least 40-50% remaining hybrid eyelashes to add more.

If you wait longer, the treatment will have to be repeated, and you will be charged the full set price instead of just the infill price.

How Much Do Hybrid Lashes Cost?

The price of hybrid lashes varies between $150 and $300 depending on your location and the artist’s popularity.

Hybrid lashes top-ups (infills) usually cost half the price of the full treatment.

Hybrid Lashes Side-Effects

Hybrid lashes side-effects are very rare but can happen. They include:

  • Allergic reactions – do a patch test before the treatment to make sure you are not allergic to lash glue
  • Infections – can happen if the artist works in unsterile conditions
  • Damage to your natural lashes – happens due to improper application. It may even be your fault if you don’t follow the aftercare tips or try to remove the hybrid lashes on your own.
  • Irritation – to avoid this, you need to clean your hybrid lashes properly, as advised by your lash technician. Learn more about cleaning your hybrid eyelashes in the text below.

Can I Remove Hybrid Lashes at Home?

This is not advisable, especially if you don’t have adequate products for lash extensions removal. Visit your lash technician to properly remove your hybrid lash extensions and clean your lashes. All of them should offer a removal service.

Hybrid Lashes vs Other Styles

What Is the Difference Between Hybrid Lashes and Classic Lashes?

Classic lashes are individual lash extensions, which means 1 lash extension applied to 1 of the natural lashes. Hybrid eyelashes use a mixture of classic lashes and volume lash extensions.

The classic lash extensions will add length to your lashes, while hybrid lashes give them length and volume, achieved by the application of volume lash extensions.

What is the Difference Between Hybrid Lashes and Russian Volume Lashes?

Russian volume lash extensions are created by applying pre-made fans of 2-6 (or in some cases more) thin, light lash extensions to one of your natural lashes. Hybrid lashes combine classic lashes and volume lashes and the result is long, dense, and thick lashes, that look more natural.

How Do I Maintain Hybrid Lash Extensions?

As said above, hybrid lashes last 6-8 weeks without infills, but they will not look that good after half of them fall out, which will happen after a month. So, a fill-in appointment is required after 3-4 weeks.

Hybrid eyelash extensions need to be cleaned regularly, to remove bacteria. Also, it is important to clean them because the build-up of dead skin and oils can break the bond of the glue. Brush them with a clean spoolie regularly and don’t use oil-based products if you want them to last longer.

How to Clean My Hybrid Eyelash Extensions?

Here are the tips on how to properly clean your hybrid lashes:

  • Use micellar water or some other product specially designed for cleaning eyelash extensions.
  • Use a clean eyeshadow brush.
  • Soak the brush in the cleanser and gently clean the lashes.
  • Dip the brush in the water and gently press them on the lashes.
  • Use a tissue to blot the lashes dry and remove all the excess water.

Cleaning your lash extensions regularly will keep them fluffy and prolong the time between infills.

Can I Wear Mascara on My Hybrid Lash Extensions?

You shouldn’t wear mascara on your hybrid eyelashes, because it will make them heavier to the eye and it can make the lashes break and damage even your natural lashes. Also, it will make them harder to clean, and as said above, cleaning your eyelash extensions is extremely important.

Do Hybrid Lashes Damage Your Natural Lashes?

If done properly and if you follow the aftercare and maintenance tips, they will not damage your natural lashes. That is why it is important to choose a skilled and certified lash technician, follow the aftercare tips, and clean your lashes regularly. Also, don’t try to remove them at home – leave it to a professional.
