What’s a Hybrid Brow Tint?

The hybrid brow tint is a crossover between regular brow tint and henna brow tint. It combines the best of both to ensure the longest-lasting results.

Hybrid dye for eyebrows usually comes as an easy-to-work-with cream, gel or paste formula that colors the hair as well as the skin.

With this brow tinting technique, you get a soft ombré powdery makeup effect. But if you’re looking for a bolder, more intense effect, hybrid brow tint can give you that, too.

Different brands of hybrid tint may have some slight differences which can impact the intensity of the results.

How Is Hybrid Brow Tint Different from a Classic Tint?

A classic brow tint focuses mostly on tinting the hair, rather than giving a stain. Also, a classic brow tint doesn’t fully penetrate the brow hair and therefore will not last as long.

The hybrid brow stain will give a much more defined and fuller look, since it stains the skin with more intensity.

You can find everything you need to know about regular brow tint plus some examples here.

How Is This Different from a Henna Brow Tint?

Hybrid dye for eyebrows is much closer to henna than traditional chemical dye – both in terms of its intensity and how long it lasts.

But the main benefit over regular henna is the convenience. Hybrid brow dye has a wider range of shades and can achieve more natural-looking results. Plus it’s easier to use and it saves time as you don’t have to leave it on for as long.

Benefits of a Hybrid Brow Tint

Given that hybrid brow tint aims to combine the benefits of 2 basic methods of tinting, these are its most notable advantages:

  • Fuller and more voluminous-looking brows
  • Lasts longer than regular and henna brow tint
  • It’s ammonia-free
  • It’s gentler on the hair and skin
  • Customizable shades
  • Stains both hairs and skin
  • Can achieve more natural-looking results

Who Is Hybrid Brow Tint Best Suited For?

Hybrid eyebrow tint is great for anyone looking to enhance their brows by getting an instant fullness and volume, and filling in any sparse areas.

This treatment is great for anyone who:

  • Wants more defined-looking eyebrows
  • Wants to darken up light brow hairs
  • Wants to fill in sparse areas in their eyebrows
  • Wants to improve brow symmetry
  • Is afraid to commit to more permanent results of brow tattoos
  • Is allergic to henna

It works well even on sparse brows and oilier skin – although, the ideal clients are those who don’t have very oily skin.

This treatment is also deemed safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, although their skin sensitivity may be increased which can potentially heighten the risk of skin irritation, so they should consult a doctor beforehand.

Who Shouldn’t Get a Hybrid Dye for Eyebrows?

Other than some pregnant clients, the treatment cannot be performed on clients who:

  • Had an allergic reaction to a patch test to any of the steps in the hybrid brows treatment
  • Have skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema
  • Have alopecia (the treatment will only stain the skin so it won’t look very natural)
  • Had recent eye surgery
  • Had a recent eye infection (such as conjunctivitis)
  • Have hypersensitive skin or eyes
  • Have a sunburn or skin trauma in the brow area (cuts, abrasions, swelling…)
  • Had PMU brows done recently (brows need to be fully healed plus the PMU tech should approve it)
  • Had botox or dermal fillers recently (get clearance from your practitioner)
  • Is undergoing cancer treatment
  • Has taken skin medication recently (Roaccutane/Isotretinoin)

Is a Hybrid Brow Tint Safe? Possible Risks + Side Effects

Yes, hybrid brow tinting is considered safe. Hybrid brow dye is specifically made to be used around the eye area and is safe for most skin types.

Hybrid dye is ammonia-free, so it doesn’t damage the hairs. Just keep in mind that it still shouldn’t be left on for too long to avoid the possibility of the hairs becoming brittle and fragile.

Still, some side effects are possible. In most cases, it’s only temporary redness or skin irritation that can be alleviated with a cool damp compress. But in cases it doesn’t go away within the first 24 hours, seek medical advice.

It’s also possible to experience an allergic reaction to the dye, which is why it’s important to do a patch test beforehand.

Hybrid Brow Tint Procedure Step by Step

Before getting started, you should have an initial consultation with your treatment provider to ensure you are a good candidate for a hybrid eyebrow tint. Ideally, this would be done 48 hours in advance.

After you’ve discussed your brow goals and confirmed with a patch test it’s safe to continue, you can move on to the actual procedure.

The first step is cleaning the brow area from makeup and debris.

Then, the brows are mapped out in the shape you want. Your perfect shade of tint is prepared.

The dye is applied to your brows with a brush and the shape is tidied up and perfected.

Depending on the depth of color you wish to achieve, hybrid tint treatment can stay on the brows anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

The longer it’s on, the darker the brows will turn out. But the unique features of the formula also have to be taken into consideration, as processing time can vary from brand to brand.

After the appropriate amount of time has passed, the mixture is removed and you are given instructions on what you should and shouldn’t do to get the most out of your results.

Hybrid brow tint is usually combined with a brow grooming technique – usually threading or waxing – to give you a clean shape. This will add to your service 10-15 minutes maximum.

NOTE

It’s important to mention that initial results may appear notably darker than you’d like.

But don’t panic! This is normal seeing as your skin was also tinted during the procedure. This will gradually fade from face washing, sweating, and sebum, so within 1-3 days you will have your perfect brow shade.

Can Hybrid Brow Tint Be Combined with a Brow Lami?

Yes. Hybrid eyebrow tint can be used after the brow lamination to help darken the reshaped brow hairs. This results in a complete brow transformation, which is why most clients tend to book them together.

Here’s a quick video tutorial of doing a hybrid brow tint at home:

@carolineashtonmakeup Watch how I do my brows. I used the ARYANA NEW YORK Hybrid Professional Eyelash And Eyebrow Color Kit in brown. This has been my favorite kit so far. The packaging is simple, directions are straightforward and the color is what it says it is. I use water to take off the product instead of cleanser so that it can get a little darker throughout the day. This typically will stay fresh for a few days and I like to do them every 1-2 weeks. Since the process of achieving a hybrid tint brow is fairly simple, we’ll leave you with just a few guidelines:

  • Stamp the dye into the skin, so the product can also get behind the hairs and onto the skin as well. Then, go over it and work it through the rest of the brow.
  • Depending on the effect you want to achieve, if doing ombre start on the part of the brow you want to look the darkest. To get a nice, faded effect in the front of the brow, use a clean applicator and bring the product from the rest of the brow to the front. This way you won’t get too much product, and the stain will appear lighter – helping you avoid boxy-looking brows.
  • When taking the product off, you can use a gentle cleanser to ensure everything was removed properly.

Is There Any Prep for Hybrid Brow Tint?

This is a very simple treatment, so there’s no need for excessive preparation. That being said, you can do a few things that will help lessen the risk of irritation and help prolong your results.

Ideally, you shouldn’t use any harsh exfoliating products (AHAs & BHAs) or retinol 3 days prior to your appointment. This will ensure your skin isn’t irritated by the hybrid dye for eyebrows and will also lessen the chances of an allergic reaction. This also goes for fake tanners.

Also, at least 1 week prior avoid getting skin resurfacing facials like chemical peels or microneedling. They will make your skin much more sensitive and reactive.

That being said, gentle exfoliation is actually recommended since it helps remove dead skin cells and allows the hybrid tint to really take to the skin.

Is There Any Aftercare for Hybrid Brow Tint?

Aftercare is also fairly simple and mostly involves avoiding a few things for 24-48 hours after the treatment:

  • Do not rub or wetten the eyebrows
  • Don’t apply brow makeup
  • Use gentle skincare without any fragrances or harsh active ingredients
  • Avoid oil-based skincare or makeup remover, as they can cause the tint to fade quicker
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, swimming, and excessive sweating as this can cause the tint to fade quicker
  • Avoid self-tanning products as they may alter the tint color

You can read more about brow tint aftercare here.

How Long Does Hybrid Brow Tint Last?

Hybrid brow tint is the longest-lasting brow tint that can stay on the hair for up to 6-7 weeks and the skin for up to 10 days! It outlasts both the traditional brow tint as well as henna brows.

However, the longevity of the results can vary depending on the brand, as well as the aftercare and the properties of the client’s hair and skin.

By this we mean the individual differences based on the length, fullness, thickness, and growth structure of the brow hair and skin type itself.

For example, clients who have oily skin may experience fading faster than someone with dry skin. But also differences in lifestyles and skincare habits can hugely contribute.

You can find more in-depth information about longevity and ways to prolong the results here.

How Much Does Hybrid Brow Tint Cost?

The price range of hybrid brow tint is anywhere from $30 to $85 – but there are many factors that can influence the price – read more about them here. The most important hybrid brow tint cost determinant is if it’s combined with other services.

If it’s an add-on to other brow services, like brow lamination or eyebrow wax, it’s charged about the same, or a bit less. Usually, these services are done together, so there may be a special price for full brow transformation.

Hybrid Brow Tint – Main Takeaways

Hybrid brow tint is a very versatile treatment great for achieving both subtle, natural brows or bold, tattoo-like effects. But the biggest benefit of hybrid brow stain, compared to other tinting methods, is its impressive durability.
